If you’re looking to ditch gas without sacrificing performance, the EGO LM2156SP self-propelled electric lawn mower* is one of the most compelling options on the market today. With impressive torque, long battery life, and user-friendly features, it’s built for homeowners who want a premium mowing experience—without the fumes, maintenance, or noise of traditional gas mowers.
That said, no mower is perfect. While this one gets a lot right, there are a few quirks worth knowing about before you buy.
Performance and Cutting Power
The LM2156SP delivers serious cutting performance thanks to its high-efficiency brushless motor and dual battery capability. Whether you’re dealing with thick grass, uneven terrain, or slightly overgrown lawns, it handles the job with ease.
The “Select Cut” multi-blade system is a standout feature. You can swap blades depending on your needs:
- A high-lift blade for bagging
- A mulching blade for finer clippings
- An extended runtime blade for efficiency
This flexibility gives you more control over your lawn’s finish than most cordless mowers.
Battery Life and Efficiency

One of the biggest concerns with cordless tools is runtime—but this mower largely puts those fears to rest. With the included 10.0Ah battery, you can typically mow a medium-to-large yard on a single charge.
There is also a charge indicator on the top that you can press a button to activate but will also light up when you are mowing so you can look down and see the charge level at any time while mowing. This lets you monitor usage and adjust accordingly (such as if you’re getting low to stop using the self-propel to save power).
Even better, the mower intelligently adjusts power output based on grass conditions. Light trimming uses less energy, while thicker patches automatically get more torque.

Self-Propelled System: Convenient, but Not Perfect
The self-propelled feature is smooth and easy to control, with variable speed adjustment that feels natural while walking.
However, there’s one noticeable downside:
The drive system produces a high-pitched whirring sound—similar to a kid’s Power Wheels toy. In some cases, it can actually be louder than the blade itself.
The good news? It’s purely cosmetic. It doesn’t affect performance at all, but it’s something you’ll definitely notice during use.
Build Quality and Ease of Use
EGO designed this mower with convenience in mind:
- One-touch folding for compact storage
- LED headlights for low-light mowing
- Adjustable deck height with a single lever
- Lightweight compared to gas alternatives
It feels solid without being overly heavy, and setup is quick right out of the box.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Strong cutting performance comparable to gas
- Excellent battery life
- Quiet operation (aside from self-propel noise)
- Versatile blade system
- Easy storage and handling
Cons
- Self-propel motor makes a noticeable “toy-like” sound
- Premium price point
- Replacement batteries can be expensive
Tips and Tricks for Getting the Most Out of Your EGO LM2156SP
1. Use the Right Blade for the Job
Switching blades isn’t just a gimmick. Use the high-lift blade for bagging leaves and the mulching blade during regular mowing for a cleaner look.
2. Mow Regularly for Maximum Efficiency
Keeping your grass at a consistent height reduces strain on the motor and extends battery life.
3. Adjust Self-Propel Speed Thoughtfully
Running the self-propel at maximum speed drains the battery faster. Match it to your walking pace instead of pushing it to the limit.
4. Avoid Wet Grass When Possible
Like most mowers, performance drops in wet conditions. You’ll get better results and longer runtime on dry grass.
5. Store Batteries Indoors
Extreme heat or cold can shorten battery lifespan. Keep your battery in a temperature-controlled space when not in use.
6. Clean the Deck Regularly
Grass buildup underneath can affect airflow and cutting efficiency. A quick clean after each mow goes a long way.
If you let it build up you can expect it to look like this after a couple of seasons:

And then after cleaning with a pressure washer (a relatively low pressure one, don’t overdo it):

If you thought that the green paint on the blades had been damaged on the earlier pictures these are the exact same blades. It was just that dirty before washing!
7. Try Mowing Without Self-Propel
On flat lawns, you may not need the drive system at all. Turning it off eliminates the extra noise and conserves battery.
Other Accessories
The mower comes with the mulching blade attached (below).

It also comes with one of the high lift bagging blades shown below:

I ran the mulching blade for the first two seasons and then switched to the high lift bagging blade this year. It can be pretty convenient to have an extra battery (various sizes available but the 10.0Ah battery is very nice):

Final Verdict
The EGO LM2156SP is a top-tier cordless mower that delivers power, convenience, and versatility in a sleek package. It’s a great fit for homeowners who want a premium electric alternative to gas without compromising on performance. This is my third season with the mower and after a good cleaning and blade change it’s ready for the year!
While the self-propel noise is a bit odd—and occasionally louder than expected—it’s a minor tradeoff in an otherwise excellent machine.
If you can live with that quirk, this mower is one of the best investments you can make for a cleaner, quieter, and more efficient lawn care routine. If you have other devices in the same EGO family that have a compatible battery pack (I have an EGO trimmer as well as an EGO electric plow that are all compatible with the same packs) it will become an even better value!
